Knitting Pattern: Fan and Feather Blanket

A little while ago I blogged about making this blanket, and people started asking me for the pattern. So I finally got it ready!

Here’s why this blanket is so fun: you just take all the yarn that you have in any particular color family–all the scraps, all the forlorn bits, all the “junk” that’s sitting in drawers and you don’t know what to do with it. And you combine yarns to make thick yarns to make this blanket.

It’s really quite easy, and it’s a great way to use up yarn that is otherwise going to waste. You knit on large needles, too, so it goes really quickly.

There’s no shaping, so it’s appropriate for beginner knitters. And it’s very satisfying because it knits up fast, but looks lovely.

You choose the color scheme, and you create the yarns by knitting with 2 or 3 strands of thin yarns at the same time. That’s what makes the blanket look complicated–even when it’s not.

Our family has started a knitting project at the Mulli Children’s Family in Kenya, teaching teenage mothers how to knit with knitting machines and create their own businesses. We’ll be returning in 2014, and all the money from this knitting pattern will go towards supporting the knitting project there.

Happy knitting!
